May laban pa

NOONG 1992, bumili ako ng isang sipi ng aklat ni David McCullough tungkol sa buhay ni Harry S. Truman, ang ika-33 pangulo ng Estados Unidos. Pangulo si Truman mula 1945 hanggang 1952. Nahalal si Truman bilang pangalawang pangulo ni Franklin Roosevelt noong halalan ng 1945. Nang namatay si Roosevelt noong 1945, pumalit si Truman. Nanungkulan lamang ng 82 araw si Truman bilang pangulo at bigla siyang naging pangulo.

Mas nakakagulat at nakakatuwa sa aklat ni McCullough ang bahagi kung paano nanalo bilang pangulo si Truman sa halalan ng 1948. Walang nag-akala na mananalo si Truman sa mahigpit niyang katunggali na si Thomas Dewey ng Republican Party. Kabilang si Truman sa Democratic Party, ang kalaban ng Repablikan.

Humina si Truman dahil nahati ang lapiang Democrata sa dalawa. Hindi sinuportahan ng mga Democrata sa mga estado sa katimugan si Truman dahil sa paninindigan ng huli sa pagbibigay ng karapatang sibil sa mga itim. Sa mga estado sa timog sumibol ang pang-aalipin sa lahing itim na sapilitang dinala sa Amerika mula Africa.

Walang nangahas na nagbigay ng magandang tsansa kay Truman sa kanyang laban noong 1948. Mas lalong humina ang mga Democrata nang lumaban si Strom Thurmond bilang pangatlong kandidato. Kabilang sa Democratic Party si Thurmond. Senador si Thurmond mula sa estado ng South Carolina.

Hanggang sa huling sandali ng kampanya, ipinamamarali ng maraming pantas at paham sa pulitika na si Dewey ang mananalo. Hindi nila sukat akalain na biglang sumirit si Truman sa mismong araw na halalan. Nanalo si Truman na nakuha nilang gapiin si Dewey kahit sa mga mahigpitang labanan sa ilang malalaking estado tulad ng California, Illinois, at Ohio.

Ani McCullough sa kanyang pagsusuri na isang malaking dahilan ang pagiging konserbatibo ng kampanya ni Dewey. Dahil “sigurado” (sure winner) na mananalo si Dewey, naging pasibo ang kampanya at hindi na umatake dahil sa pangamba na madapa at magkamali at bumaliktad ang momentum sa panig ni Truman.

Nawalan ng puso na sumugal ang kampo ni Dewey dahil sigurado naman mananalo ang manok. Bakit nga guguluhin pa samantalang ang pinakamagandang gawin ay tumahik na lamang at manatili sa isang sulok? Ganito ang katwiran ni Dewey.

Samantala, agresibo si Truman sa kanyang kampanya. Ginamit niya ang tinawag na “whistle stop” campaign kung saan umikot ang isang tren na lulan siya. Kinausap niya ang maraming tao sa iba’t-ibang estado. Hindi alam ng kampo ni Dewey na unti-unting bumaliktad ang kanyang mga supporter at sa dakong huli, kumampi kay Truman.

Hindi akalain ng mga pulitiko at mga pantas ang biglaang pagbaligtad ng mga estadong kampi kay Dewey. Ito ang pinakamalaking upset na nangyari sa kasaysayan ng pulitika sa Estados Unidos. Sa isang insulto at nangyari ito noong araw mismo ng halalan, may lumabas na larawan si Truman na hawak ang isang peryodiko – ang Chicago Tribune – na nagdeklarang “Dewey Wins!” Tampulan ng tawanan ang larawan dahil hindi nanalo si Dewey.

A FRIEND called up last night expressing his disgust over the latest published survey results but not without asking if Leni would recover. I answered in the affirmative and said she has about 85 days to raise her political campaign to the next level. But her political campaign has to be aggressive, very aggressive indeed. It has to fight with the unusual ferocity of a wounded tiger in a win or die situation. A gladiatorial attitude is a must, therefore.

Political mood changes. When it changes, it is always drastically What is true today may not be true by tomorrow. This has always been the case everywhere. A single spark could start a prairie fire, so the old adage goes.

Leni’s political campaign does not need a re-calibration, or a re-twerking, or slight modifications of strategies, tactics and some aspects of her political campaign. It needs an overhaul – from top to bottom. Its attitude is key. The message is the main target.

Its message tree has to be recast to reflect aggressive themes. The primary message should revolve on what will happen to the country in a BBM presidency. That the Philippines becomes a colony of China? Then, highlight it and make it prominent.

That the BBM presidency will lead major BPO firms to withdraw from the Philippines and kill the BPO industry? Enhance it to the point that those narrow-minded and bigoted millennials will be threatened with loss of their jobs. Scare them out of their wits.

That a new pandemic will hit the Philippines and just like Duterte, BBM is very lazy to work and attend to it? Just do it. Let the voters worry about it. That’s the only way they will know that they will be voting for an idiot, a sluggard to replace the criminal.

Stop those “Leni is great” messages. They don’t do well. The opponent is the devil incarnate. Even Archangel Gabriel had a sword in his hand to defeat the devil. Give them a dose of their own medicine.

Incidentally, expect the BBM campaign to go slow and easy, turn conservative and become complacent because it is leading. That’s the time, the campaign of the other side has to hit hard to become very, very aggressive and ferocious.
