3 Pinoy staff sa UN namatay sa duty sa Covid-19

TATLONG Pinoy na nagtatrabaho sa United Nations (UN) ang namatay habang ginagampanan ang kanilang tungkulin dahil sa Covid-19 sa headquarters nito sa New York, Estados Unidos nitong Mayo 6, 2021.
Ayon sa Department of Foreign Affairs, sa isang Annual Memorial Service sa pamamagitan ng virtual, pinarangalan ng UN Secretary-General ang tatlong staff na Pinoy na sina Joanna Abaya, na nagserbisyo sa United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); Dr. Ronald Santos, nakatalaga sa United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq; at Maria Luisa Almirol Castillo, nagserbisyo sa United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
Sabi ng DFA, sinabi ni UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres na sa 82 member-states, nasa 336 UN personnel ang namatay nitong 2020 sa serbisyo na may kaugnayan sa COVID-19.
“The Philippines is grateful for the remarkable work of these Filipinos in the United Nations and for their sacrifices”, ayon kay Ambassador Enrique A. Manalo, Permanent Representative ng Philippine Mission to the United Nations.
“Their legacy and dedication will serve as an inspiration for all of us”, dagdag pa nito.
Napag-alaman na 657 Pinoy na uniform personnel mula sa Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at Philippine National Police (PNP) ang nagtratrabaho sa UN. Nakatalaga ang mga ito sa headquarters at field. (Lordeth B. Bonilla)
