The House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted a resolution commending President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and national government agencies for their response to the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Sarangani, General Santos City, and other parts of Mindanao on June 8.

Through voice voting during the special session called by President Marcos, the plenary approved House Resolution No. 1132 introduced by Speaker Faustino “Bojie” G. Dy III and all his deputies, led by Senior Deputy Speaker and South Cotabato 2nd District Rep. Ferdinand L. Hernandez.

The resolution states that the House “commends President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and the concerned national government agencies for their swift, effective, coordinated, and compassionate response to the victims of the Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake of 8 June 2026,” noting that these efforts reflected “the Administration’s commitment to public service and the welfare of the Filipino people.”

Co-authors of the measure include Deputy Speakers Janette L. Garin (Iloilo, 1st District), Yasser Alonto Balindong (Lanao del Sur, 2nd District), Francisco Paolo P. Ortega V (La Union, 1st District), Jefferson F. Khonghun (Zambales, 1st District), Kristine Singson-Meehan (Ilocos Sur, 2nd District), Ronaldo V. Puno (Antipolo City, 1st District), Ferjenel G. Biron (Iloilo, 4th District), Raymond Democrito C. Mendoza (TUCP Party-list), Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano (Misamis Oriental, 2nd District), David “Jay-Jay” C. Suarez (Quezon, 2nd District), Maria Rachel J. Arenas (Pangasinan, 3rd District), Alfredo “Albee” B. Benitez (Negros Occidental, 3rd District), and Vincent Franco “Duke” D. Frasco (Cebu, 5th District).

The measure cited the government’s rapid response following the disaster, which caused deaths, injuries, displacement, and extensive damage to homes, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, public infrastructure, and other vital facilities across affected areas of Mindanao.

It noted that the scale of the earthquake highlighted “the urgent need for immediate government intervention to address the needs of affected families, restore essential services, and facilitate the recovery of affected communities.”

The resolution recognized the efforts of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Energy, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Department of Information and Communications Technology, telecommunications and connectivity providers, and other government and private sector partners.

According to the measure, the coordinated actions of these agencies and organizations “have significantly mitigated the effects of the disaster” through the delivery of emergency relief, medical assistance, communications connectivity, electricity and fuel support, road-clearing operations, infrastructure restoration, damage assessments, and other essential services.

The House likewise acknowledged the administration’s provision of relief goods, emergency shelter assistance, medical services, damage assessments, rehabilitation efforts, financial aid, and other forms of humanitarian assistance for affected families and communities.

While recognizing the assistance already extended, the resolution noted that many residents continue to require support as they recover from the effects of the earthquake. It therefore urged “the continued implementation and strengthening of relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction programs,” including emergency shelter assistance, medical services, communications connectivity, electricity restoration, fuel assistance, financial and medical aid through the PCSO, and the expeditious repair and restoration of damaged roads, bridges, ports, airports, schools, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure.

The measure also emphasized that the restoration of communications, power supply, transportation networks, and access to essential services remains critical to ensuring the recovery of affected communities and the efficient delivery of government assistance. (
