BATO ‘DI PWEDE HULIHIN SA LOOB NG SENADO, KUNG SA LABAS, LABAS NA KAMI DIYAN – SOTTO

MARIING iginiit ni Senate President Tito Sotto na hindi maaaring arestuhin si Senador Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa sa loob ng gusali ng Senado, kahit pa may inilabas umanong warrant of arrest ang International Criminal Court (ICC) kaugnay ng war on drugs noong panahon ni dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte.

“We cannot allow any senator to be arrested in the Senate premises.”
(“Hindi namin papayagan na arestuhin ang sinumang senador sa loob ng gusali ng Senado.”)

Ayon kay Sotto, ito ay bahagi ng tinatawag na institutional courtesy upang mapanatili ang dangal at integridad ng Senado bilang isang malayang sangay ng pamahalaan. Ngunit kung gawin ang pag-aresto sa labas ng Senado, hindi na umano saklaw ng tuntuning ito:

“Outside the Senate premises, that’s no longer our concern.”
(“Kung sa labas ng Senado mangyari, labas na kami dyan”)

“I am not privy to the warrant being issued. But as I have said in the past and in consultation with some members of the Senate, to preserve the dignity of the Senate, and as a matter of institutional courtesy, we cannot allow any senator to be arrested in the Senate premises,” ani Sotto.

Nilinaw naman niya na kung sakaling may isagawang pag-aresto sa sinumang senador sa labas ng Senado, hindi na ito saklaw ng institusyon.

“Outside the Senate premises, that’s no longer our concern,” pahayag pa ni Sotto.

Samantala nilinaw naman ni Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin na hindi awtomatikong maaaresto si Dela Rosa dahil may inisyung bagong patakaran ang Supreme Court (SC) tungkol sa isyu ng extradition.

“Not anymore. The Supreme Court has since come out with a new rule on extradition requiring a prior resort to a court before the person subject of extradition may be brought out of the country,” giit ni Bersamin.
