In a significant move towards acknowledging the pivotal role of criminologists in maintaining peace, order, and national security, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared November 3 to 9 of every calendar year as the “Philippine Criminology Week.” This proclamation, embodied in Proclamation No. 397 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on November 7, is a testament to the administration’s commitment to recognizing and honoring the contributions of criminologists in the Philippines.
The proclamation underscores the imperative need to appreciate the criminology profession’s role in safeguarding national security, emphasizing the dedication of Filipino criminologists who have played a crucial part in the development of the nation, particularly in the realms of public safety, peace, and order.
The Professional Regulatory Board of Criminology, operating under the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC), has been designated to spearhead the observance of the Philippine Criminology Profession Week. This pivotal body is tasked with outlining programs, projects, and activities for the annual celebration.
Notably, all national government agencies and instrumentalities are not merely urged but actively encouraged to participate and support the effective implementation of Proclamation No. 397.
This presidential declaration is not merely a symbolic gesture; it carries profound significance, shedding light on the evolution and professionalization of criminology in the Philippines.
The roots of criminology education in the country trace back to 1954, marking the establishment of the first educational institution dedicated to the scientific study of crime.
The true professionalization of the practice, however, took place in 1972 with the creation of the Board of Examiners for Criminologists (BEC) under Republic Act No. 6506.
As we celebrate the inaugural Philippine Criminology Week, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the crucial role criminologists play in our society. These professionals, equipped with a deep understanding of criminal behavior, contribute significantly to the prevention and resolution of crimes, thereby ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
Moreover, the recognition of Philippine Criminology Week serves as a platform to appreciate the tireless efforts of criminologists who often work behind the scenes. Their commitment to the ethical practice of their profession has not only contributed to maintaining law and order but has also played a vital role in shaping policies related to public safety and security.
The government’s proactive stance in highlighting the importance of criminology is commendable. By officially dedicating a week to celebrate and recognize the contributions of criminologists, the administration sends a strong message about the critical nature of their work.
It is an acknowledgment that goes beyond words, signifying a commitment to supporting and uplifting the criminology profession in the Philippines.
It is a laudable step towards acknowledging the unsung heroes working diligently to ensure the safety and security of our nation.
As we embark on this annual celebration, let it be a reminder not only to recognize the past achievements of criminologists but also to encourage and empower future generations who will continue to play a vital role in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the well-being of our society.
