THE administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has recently reported substantial improvements in the peace and order situation in the Philippines. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)’s year-end report for November 2023 highlights the concerted efforts and strategic initiatives that have played a pivotal role in creating a more tranquil and secure environment across local government units (LGUs).
One of the standout achievements highlighted in the report is the collaborative synergy among members of the DILG family, contributing to the enhancement of the national crime situation.
According to data from the Philippine National Police (PNP), the country witnessed a commendable decrease of 0.14 percent in the total number of crime incidents, coupled with a notable 1.38 percent increase in Crime Solution Efficiency (CSE) after the easing of pandemic restrictions.
From January to November 2023, both index and non-index crimes experienced a decline, with an 8.44 percent reduction in index crime volume and a 7.32 percent decrease in non-index crime volume compared to the same period the previous year. This positive trend, particularly in seven of the eight focus index crimes, underscores the success of the DILG’s comprehensive approach to addressing various criminal activities.
The DILG’s commitment to fostering peace and order is further demonstrated through its efforts to strengthen Peace and Order Councils (POCs) throughout the country. Recognizing the importance of local institutions as active partners in the government’s peace and order drive, these councils have been empowered to devise and execute strategic measures to improve the peace and order and public safety situation in their respective areas of responsibility.
In the realm of combating illegal drugs, the DILG’s dedication is evident through the institutionalization of the Philippine Anti-Illegal Drugs Strategy (PADS) since 2018. The commitment to strengthening Anti-Drug Abuse Councils (ADACs) and fulfilling obligations under PADS has resulted in significant progress. The quarterly report of the Community-Based Drug Rehabilitation Program (CBDRP) indicates the custody of 17,128 individuals, with 17,561 graduates, and continuous efforts to monitor and track LGUs’ anti-illegal drugs commitments.
Noteworthy programs such as the BIDA Program, ADAC Performance Audit, Barangay Drug Clearing Program (BDCP), and Amendment Drug-Free Workplace Policy highlight the agency’s multifaceted approach to tackling the illegal drug problem. The emphasis on capacity development, orientation, and strengthening institutional capacities, as seen in initiatives like Strengthening Institutional Capacities of Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (SICAP-BADAC) and Capacity Development Orientation for Provinces without Special Drug Education Centers (SDECs), further showcases the depth and breadth of the DILG’s commitment.
President Marcos Jr.’s administration, through the DILG, has undeniably made transformative strides in creating a safer and more secure Philippines. As the nation continues to navigate complex challenges, the success of these initiatives underscores the importance of collaborative efforts, strategic planning, and a commitment to the well-being of the Filipino people. The reported improvements in peace and order are a testament to the effective governance and dedicated initiatives spearheaded by the DILG under the current administration.
