PINAY TENNIS STAR ALEX EALA, PINATUTULUNGAN NI SEN. ERWIN TULFO SA GOBYERNO

HINIHILING ni Senator Erwin Tulfo sa national government na tulungan si Philippine tennis star Alex Ealana maaring maharap sa $10,000 fine at ‘zero-point ranking penalty for 52 weeks’ mula sa Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), matapos piliing ‘wag dumalo sa mandatory WTA 1000 China Open, upang katawanin ang Pilipinas sa 2026 Asian Games sa Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Ang Asian Games ay gaganapin ng September 19 -October 4, 2026, habang ang WTA 1000 China Open ay nakatakda sa September 30- October 11, 2026. Pinili ni Eala na unahin ang pag-compete para sa national flag, sa hangaring makakuha ng gintong medalya para sa bansa at para sa ‘potential qualification path for the Olympic Games.’

Sa kanyang manifestation ng pagsuporta sa stand ni Senate Committee on Sports Chair Senator Bong Go, sinabi ni Tulfo na sa gitna ng kinakaharap ni Eala, “I believe this is the time for our government to step in.”

“Kung pagmumultahin siya dahil pinili niyang kumatawan sa ating bayan, hindi ba nararapat lamang na magpaabot ng tulong o suporta ang gobyerno sa kanya? Ten thousand dollars may be a significant amount, but compared to the honor of having one of our best athletes represent our country, I believe it is a price worth paying for,” dagdag pa ni Tulfo.

Aniya, “Hindi natin dapat ilagay si Alex sa sitwasyon na kailangan niyang mamili. Pinili niya po na maglaro para sa Pilipinas sa halip na para sa kanyang professional career. She should not have to carry that burden alone. Kung ang kanyang puso ay nasa Pilipinas, kung gusto niyang isuot ang ating national colors at lumaban para sa ating bansa, let us support her decision.”

Gayunman, sinabi ni Tulfo na anumang tulong mula sa gobyerno ay dapat na ligal, properly authorized, transparent at naaayon sa auditing and accounting rules.

Kaugnay niyan ay hinimok niya ang Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee at iba pang concerned government agencies na maghanap ng paraan para kay Eala.

“Sometimes supporting our athletes does not require millions of pesos. Sometimes, it simply means telling them: “We believe in you. We are behind you. Go represent the Philippines, Alex”. Alex has already done her part…she has trained, sacrificed, competed against the best in the world and made us proud. Ngayon, pagkakataon naman natin na ipakita sa kanya na ang Pilipinas ay nasa likod niya,” ani Tulfo.

“Kung ang US$10,000 ang magiging hadlang para maisuot niya ang Philippine colors sa Asian Games, then let us find a lawful way to remove that obstacle….because a penalty can be paid. But the opportunity for a Filipino athlete to proudly represent her country—to fight for the Philippine flag and inspire millions of young Filipinos—is priceless. Alex, kung ito ang iyong pinili, hindi ka nag-iisa. The Philippines should stand with you. Hangad din po natin ang tagumpay di lang ni Alex, kundi ng lahat ng mga atletang kumakatawan ngayon sa Pilipinas sa paparating na 2026 Asian Games,” dagdag pa ni Tulfo.

“Under WTA rules for players ranked in her tier (around No. 18 in the world), skipping a mandatory 1000 event without an approved exemption carries a fine of $10,000 fine. While the Philippine Tennis Association (PhilTA) reportedly requested a formal waiver for Eala, national team duties do not automatically qualify for standard WTA exemptions, which are typically reserved for injuries or personal emergencies,” paliwanag pa ng Senador.
