EO 285 ni dating Pangulong Erap ipinababasura ni Cong. Barbers kay PBBM

IPINABABASURA ni Surigao del Norte 2nd District Representative Robert Ace S. Barbers kay Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. ang Executive Order (EO) 285 ni dating Pangulong Joseph “Erap” Estrada na nagbibigay kapangyarihan sa Bureau of Immigration (BI) para awtomatikong i-convert ang tourist visas bilang student visas.

Ayon kay Barbers, ang ganitong setup na ipinatutupad ng BI sa kasalukuyan ay malaki ang posibilidad na maabuso ng mga tiwaling personalidad upang magamit umano sa mga iligal na aktibidad.
“The 16,200 student visas that the BI granted to Chinese nationals in 2023 is simply unacceptable. Nevermind if other countries grant more, we should never use that as our yardstick given our tense relationship with China,” ani Barbers.

“The DFA should be the sole agency in charge of granting visas to foreigners. It alone possesses the expertise to determine whether the applicants are eligible or not,” dagdag pa ng mambabatas.

Sa ilalim ng EO 285, ang inter agency committee para sa mga foreign students ay nabuo sa pangunguna ng Commission on Higher Education (CHED), katuwang ang DFA, NBI, NICA at DepEd bilang mga miyembro. (Henry Padilla)
