As concerns grow over the impact of excessive social media use and video gaming on Filipino youth, Abra Lone District Rep. JB Bernos on Sunday urged local government units (LGUs) to invest more in sports, arts, and community-based activities that strengthen real-world connections, develop character, and steer young people away from harmful influences.

“As we continue to lament that our children are getting more disconnected from reality because of technology, I believe that now more than ever we should double down on activities that help establish real human connection,” Abra lone district Rep. JB Bernos said.

Bernos, a member of the House committee on local government, called on local government units to renew their focus on engaging the youth in activities that foster community spirit.

“Sports, arts, theater, and other collective activities are tried and tested solutions that benefit our youth. Sa tulong ng mga ito ay mailalayo natin sila sa karahasan, sa droga, masamang bisyo, atbp.,” said the lawmaker.

He emphasized the need for LGUs to “create tighter communities,” where the government is also involved with families and the welfare of children.

“We have various partners that we can rely on in this regard, such as the church, non-government organizations, and schools. Lumikha tayo ng plataporma para maengganyo natin ang kabataan na may mas malaking mundo sa labas ng cellphone at computer,” said Bernos.

The solon also encouraged LGUs to organize activities that teach civic responsibility to the youth.

He suggested tree-planting and environmental cleanups, nature trips, museum tours, and other similar activities that “show the youth that they can make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
