As I, together with William Seva and Raquel Espina, entered the chapel at Heritage Park in Taguig City, I saw fellow De La Salle University alumnus and the country’s Second Gentleman Atty. Manases “Mans” Carpio giving a eulogy about his late father Atty. Lucas Carpio Jr. who recently passed away at the age of 80.

He was a prominent Filipino corporate lawyer, litigator, and the father-in-law of Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte.

His widow, retired Court of Appeals associate justice Agnes Reyes-Carpio told this writer that, “my husband is generous and caring especially to those who have less in life.”

He was approachable and loved to help a lot in a quiet way, he added.

He firmly believed that happiness is an elusive transitory thing. If you set out to search for it, you will find it evasive. But if you try to bring happiness, even in a simple way, to others then it comes to you.

The Carpio couple is blessed with three children, all males: Mans, Waldo and Benedicto.

Atty. Lucas earned his undergraduate degree at De La Salle College in Manila and his law degree from Ateneo de Davao University. He co-founded Carpio & Bello Law Offices alongside former Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, specializing in corporate law and litigation.

He worked as a junior associate at Yulo & Bello Law Office, managed the litigation group at Security Bank & Trust Co., and held roles as an independent director for Now Corp. and NOW Telecom Co., Inc., as well as a director for Manila Jockey Club, Inc.

In February 2025, he joined former President Rodrigo Duterte as legal counsel to help block the impeachment complaint filed against Vice President Sara Duterte.

He is the brother of retired Supreme Court Associate Justice and former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales and a relative of former Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio.
