SEN. VILLAR PINAGBIBITIW NG AGRARIAN REFORM GROUP, ‘PAHIRAP SA MGA MAGSASAKA’

PINAGBIBITIW ng agrarian reform group si Senadora Cynthia Villar sa kanyang committee chairmanships nang masilip ang kanyang vested interests sa debate nila ni Senador Raffy Tulfo nitong nakaraang linggo.

Sinabi ng National Network of Agrarian Reform Advocates-Youth (NNARA-Youth) na dapat magbitiw si Villar sa kanyang chairmanship sa Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food and Agrarian Reform, at Senate Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change dahil ang mga Filipino ay nagdurusa mula sa kanyang “self-serving statements and actions.”

“Amid the worsening crisis on food and agriculture, we need sincere public servants who genuinely understand the plight of Filipinos. Given her track record as a self-serving politician who blatantly uses state power and resources to forward her business interests, we demand Senator Villar to resign…,” giit ng grupo sa isang statement na pirmado ng 75 iba pang organisasyon hanggang nitong Linggo (November 20).

Partikular na inupakan ng NNARA-Youth si Villar sa pagdepensa sa mga ginagawa ng real estate developers na pag-convert sa agricultural land sa residential at commercial spaces sa isang tensiyunadong debate nila ni Tulfo sa proposed budget 2023 ng Department of Agriculture.

Si Villar, misis ng nangungunang bilyonaryo sa bansa na si dating Senate President Manny Villar at ang pamilya ay nagmamay-ari ng real estate giant na Vista Land and Lifescapes, ang isponsor para sa budget ng DA sa plenary.

Sagot ni Villar kay Tulfo: Ang kanyang pamilya ay hindi bumibili ng lupa sa rural areas dahil ang sa urban areas ay mas malaki ang resale value.

“We question Senator Villar’s capacity to serve the interest of Filipino farmers, who comprise the majority of our population, as this contradicts her family’s business interests. As a land-owning elite who converts lands for a living, the class interest of Senator Villar can never be reconciled with the interest of ordinary farmers to own the land they have been tilling for decades,” diin ng NNARA-Youth.

Sabi ng grupo, si Villar ay may pananagutan sa paghirap ng mga magsasaka dahil ang batas na kanyang pinanday, ang Rice Liberalization Law (RA 11203), ay naging dahilan ng pag-import ng bigas at nagpapabagsak sa presyo ng palay.
